"Clothing just doesn't fit my body."

No, your body is perfect.

It doesn’t fit because most sizes today are still loosely based on this guy

Here's what happened:

Title

1. The wrong starting point

In WWII, women entered factories — but skirts were unsafe. So the government used a male fisherman’s body to design workwear.

2. The birth of ready-to-wear

Post-war, brands needed mass sizing. That same fisherman body became the starting point.

3. It never really fit

Brands knew it didn’t work. So they started tweaking patterns to fit their shoppers.

4. The system got messy

The government tried to standardize again in the ‘80s — but most brands had moved on.

5. Then came vanity sizing

That’s when brands started shrinking numbers on tags to make you feel better.

(It’s why your closet holds five different sizes — and none fit quite right.)
